about

Kilometre Club's Daniel Field usually likes to make slow music, but quickly. With an impressive output of mostly beat-less ambient over the past few years, he slowly started crafting tracks that sounded different, keeping some of the moody and textured pads and guitars, but adding percussion. Given his lack of expertise with drum programming, Daniel felt his tracks were lacking something. Through the growing ambient community building around Toronto studio Half Moon Audio, Daniel met Paul Geldart, who performs as Astrolope. Paul's creative energy sparkles through his mastery of acoustic drums, drum machines, and modular synth, in his solo work as well as his contributions to various Toronto groups and artists. Luckily for Daniel, Paul was happy to work together.

Outside Choices is the result of their collaboration. Daniel created moody and psychedelic ambient electronica tracks inspired by his far-too-late-in-life introduction to 90s IDM, which were then expanded by Paul's percussion work. Each track takes different approaches to its sound, with acoustic and electronic instruments blending, clashing, and warping to create a sound that is equal parts familiar and unusual.

EP opener Marning pairs warbly FM synth sounds with raw drumming processed into unpredictable glitches, with pads following suit. 2fle is in 7/8 time, with jarring but never abrasive shifts and arpeggios. All/Flax features ARP2600 drum samples coupled with heavily stretched and mangled drum loops, all dancing around moody and haunting synth tones. Closer Symbolate features a vocal sample of Daniel running an augmentative technology workshop, and blends surfy guitars with propulsive drums and heavy Rhodes bass.

Outside Choices manages to sound weird yet engrossing, a perfect psychedelic ambient IDM trip that will find fans across the electronic music spectrum.
